Star Wars fans have taken to social media to express their love for the axolotl-like alien Nix, who featured heavily in the trailer for Massive Entertainment’s newly revealed open-world action game Star Wars Outlaws.
Just last month social media was aflame with messages of appreciation for the strange frog-boy Turgle from Respawn's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Now, with Turgle receding quickly in the rearview mirror, the fickle Star Wars fanbase have found a fluffier target for their sometimes terrifying love: the cute, and playful sidekick to Star Wars: Outlaws protagonist Kay Vess, known simply as Nix.
Upon being introduced to Nix, multiple Star Wars fans immediately pledged to give their lives to protect the charismatic creature, who, to be fair, looks like it can take care of itself, judging by Star Wars Outlaws' newly released gameplay trailer.
Since I've been asked a couple times now, this charming lil creature is Kay Vess' loyal companion called Nix! I love Nix very much. More Kay and Nix action coming tomorrow during #UbiForward! #StarWarsOutlaws pic.twitter.com/EuDZEr94RO

Nix belongs to a rare and exotic species known as a Merqaal, which hail from a planet of unknown origin. However, some fans were quick to point out its resemblance to the noble axolotyl – a type of frilled aquatic salamander found on Earth (obviously), which has the incredible ability to regrow entire limbs. Hopefully, Massive Entertainment won’t feel the need to have Nix exhibit that ability following a scrape with the Empire, or the various criminal syndicates set to populate Star Wars Outlaws' story.

Others were quick to express their appreciation for the character design through the creation of fan art depicting Nix, who is set to be voiced by Star Wars veteran Dee Bradley Baker, often alongside lifelong friend Vess.

During gameplay, the player can prompt Nix to perform certain actions in a similar way to how protagonist Cal Kestis worked in concert with droid BD-1 in the Star Wars Jedi game series. It's also a clever way in general to have Vess interact with objects from afar while being, as far as we know, unable to use the force in any way.
Star Wars Outlaws is set to release later this year on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
